PwnCNC machines use shielded cables throughout the system to help reduce the effects of electrical noise and EMI. This article explains which cables are shielded, what shield drain grounding means, and what customers should do today.
Which cables are shielded?
The following cable groups on our machines are shielded:
- Spindle power cable
- Spindle control cable
- ATC control cable
- All stepper motor cables
- Proximity switch cables
These shielded cable runs are part of our overall effort to improve EMI resistance and system reliability.
What is shield drain grounding?
A cable shield helps reduce electrical noise by surrounding the inner conductors with a conductive layer. For shielding to be most effective, that shield should also have a proper drain path to ground.
In simple terms, the shield blocks or captures unwanted electrical interference, and the drain path gives that interference a place to go.
Without a defined drain path, the cable is still shielded, but the shielding is not being used to its fullest potential.
Does this mean there is something wrong with my machine?
Not necessarily.
A shielded cable without a completed shield-drain implementation is still better than an unshielded cable. Many customers will never experience EMI-related symptoms at all.
This is mainly about improving EMI robustness and bringing the shielding system closer to best practice. It does not automatically mean the machine is unsafe, defective, or that the wiring must be completely replaced.
Should I stop using my machine?
No.
At this time, there is no operating mode that customers need to avoid solely because of this. If your machine is operating normally, you can continue using it.
The main reason to investigate further is if you are seeing symptoms that may point to electrical interference.
What symptoms could indicate EMI-related issues?
Potential symptoms can include:
- Unusual machine behavior
- Inconsistent or failed homing
- False triggers
- Unexpected motion
- Other intermittent electrical oddities
These symptoms do not always mean EMI is the cause, but they are worth checking if they appear.
What is PwnCNC working on?
We are developing a low-cost bus bar and wiring kit that will provide a defined way to add proper shield-drain grounding to the applicable cable runs on our machines.
The kit is intended to include:
- A bus bar
- Wiring needed for installation
- Instructions showing how to connect the shield drain paths for the relevant cables
This is meant to be a straightforward, practical solution for customers who want a cleaner and more complete shield grounding setup.
When will the kit be available?
The kit is still in development and will not be available for at least a few months while we complete sourcing from vendors and finalize the package.
What should I do in the meantime?
If your machine is working normally, continue using it.
If you are experiencing symptoms that may be related to EMI, contact PwnCNC support and we will help troubleshoot the issue.
Summary
PwnCNC machines use shielded cables on the spindle, ATC, steppers, and proximity switch systems. Proper shield drain grounding is the next step in getting the most benefit from those cable shields. We are working on a simple bus bar and wiring kit to make that process easier for customers.
Until then, customers do not need to stop using their machines. If your machine is behaving normally, keep running it. If you notice unusual electrical or motion-related symptoms, reach out to support.
