(Spindle Kit Version – Non-Enclosed VFD)

This article applies to Spindle Kits where the VFD is not pre-enclosed in our plug-and-play housing.

If you purchased a Spindle System, your VFD wiring is already completed inside the enclosure and this article does not apply.

⚠️ Before You Begin

Do NOT plug the power cord into the wall outlet.

The VFD must remain completely disconnected from mains power while wiring.

Working on a live VFD can result in:

  • Severe injury

  • Equipment damage

  • Electrical shock

Verify the power cord is unplugged before proceeding.

What You’ll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Good lighting

  • A few minutes of patience

Important: Follow Your Sticker

On the inside of your VFD cover you will find a wiring diagram sticker.

That sticker reflects how your specific spindle kit was tested before shipment.

Wire colors may vary slightly between production runs.
Always follow the diagram included with your unit.

If the sticker and this article differ, trust the sticker.

Step 1 – Wiring the Spindle Motor Cable

The spindle motor cable connects to the U, V, W, and GND terminals on the VFD.

Match the wires as follows:

VFD Terminal Spindle Cable Wire
U Red
V Black
W White
GND Green/Yellow

Installation Tips

  • Insert each spade fully into the terminal slot.

  • The flat part of the spade should face upward.

  • The wire should point downward.

  • You may need to rotate the spade slightly while inserting — this is intentional and helps retention.

After inserting:

  • Gently tug each wire to confirm it is secure.

  • Use a zip tie to secure the spindle cable bundle for strain relief.

Loose motor connections can cause:

  • Under-voltage faults

  • Erratic spindle behavior

  • Permanent VFD damage

Step 2 – Wiring the AC Power Cord

Now wire the incoming mains power to the L1, L2, and GND terminals.

VFD Terminal Power Cord Wire
L1 Black
L2 White
GND Green

If your power cord uses different color standards, follow your included sticker.

Optional: Braking Resistor

If you purchased a braking resistor:

  • One lead goes to P+

  • The other lead goes to PB

Order does not matter between the two resistor wires.

If you do not have a braking resistor, leave these terminals empty.

Before Applying Power

Double-check:

  • All wires are fully seated

  • No copper is exposed outside terminals

  • No loose strands are visible

  • Ground is properly connected

  • Terminal screws are tightened firmly

Do not rush this step.

Incorrect wiring can destroy the VFD instantly upon power-up.

After Wiring Is Complete

Only after everything is secure should you:

  1. Close the VFD cover

  2. Mount the VFD securely

  3. Plug into a properly rated outlet
